Suzanne LewisI believe all of us are called to be of service to others in some capacity. Each person has unique qualities and talents to offer. Volunteering at Hospice of Laramie allows me to use my gifts in the best way possible for me.
Volunteering is never a one-size-fits-all opportunity. There isn’t just one thing that everyone can do. There are an infinite number of opportunities to be of service, even in our community. The key is to choose something that you can feel good about, something that fits your talents and experience. Just try something. If you don’t like it, try another way. Knowing that you are going to die soon can be a terrifying thought to cope with. It’s a time when you want to be comforted and reassured. I have found that just holding a hand or being a presence in the room can make a difference to hospice patients. Silence can be golden when shared with another. It’s these moments shared with hospice patients that make my time with them so rewarding. I can tell you that they give me far more than I give them. Hospice patients aren’t dying, they are living their last days, and they deserve to do so with dignity. |
