Sarah GorinDowntown Clinic
It’s important to me to volunteer because my time and skills can help address needs in our community that will otherwise go unmet. The nonprofits that are part of United Way show the range of needs in Laramie, and there are many other organizations – such as Laramie Connections – that fill a niche and make a difference. My mother-in-law says, “Make yourself useful as well as ornamental.” If you can talk on the phone, work on a computer, tidy up, cook, drive, and generally be nice to people, you can volunteer; and if you have other knowledge or skills to contribute, that’s great too.

Our country’s healthcare system is a mess. We have truly fantastic intellectual and technological resources, but with limited availability. The care offered by the Downtown Clinic enables hundreds of local residents to be well enough to work, take care of their families, and get some joy from life. My current volunteer task focuses on obtaining free medications for Downtown Clinic clients from pharmaceutical manufacturers’ patient assistance programs (medications the clinic can’t afford to stock). This means I enter data, fill out forms, and talk on the phone. . . just one little piece, added to many other pieces, to provide effective medical care. Sarah serves the Downtown Clinic in many ways, especially behind the scenes. One great area that she helps with is medication applications for Patient Assistance: gaining medication from pharmaceutical companies. Last year she supported us in gaining $200,000 worth of medicines for clients Sarah Gorin is the July Volunteer of the Month for the Downtown Clinic Sponsored by Pinnacle Bank.
