Volunteering within your community is of utmost importance for several reasons. The most significant reason is supporting others in need. Even something that may seem relatively insignificant, such as providing a 10-minute ride across town, can have a huge impact on an individual in our community. It is also important to give our community members a chance and, when needed, a second chance to thrive.

As a college student at the University of Wyoming who has lived and grown up in Laramie for the majority of my life, I have goals to become a dental professional within my community. I strongly believe that it is crucially important to be aware of the community you are a part of and its needs. Therefore, it is important to take the time to meet and listen to others. Even within a small town like Laramie, many people can go unrecognized. From my time at the university, I have noticed a separate community within their own bubble, but I think it is necessary to step out of that bubble and get to know the community in Laramie beyond the university. I have had the great opportunity to truly connect with multiple people through community service. In doing so, I have been able to listen and gain perspective on some of the needs, especially healthcare needs, of people within my community. I believe that understanding the barriers and facilitators for treatment needs will help me become the best provider I can be within my community. With that being said, I would encourage other young adults or students as well to step out of their bubble and get to know their community. You may hear about the needs within the community, but the reality and understanding of these needs become clear when you gain firsthand experience. Not only do you gain an understanding, but you also get to meet absolutely amazing individuals whom you may have never thought of talking to. Before you know it, they are showing you their new puppy, and you exchange numbers. It is truly an outstanding and fulfilling opportunity that I would encourage others to explore. If nothing else, get involved to gain some community service hours, and I promise that you will become addicted to the feeling of fulfillment. There are multiple aspects of Laramie Connections that compel me to continue serving. As I mentioned before, I love being able to make connections and meet new people within my community. Currently, most of what I do for Laramie Connections involves providing local transportation. The transportation service allows me to have one-on-one conversations with both new and familiar people in the community. The rides don't even feel like work or a service; rather, they feel more like giving a ride to a friend. I have the opportunity to listen to many stories, gain insightful advice, and learn new jokes. So, for me, it's the people I have met that motivate me to work with Laramie Connections. I also believe that the work I do for Laramie Connections is truly impactful. I take members to doctor's appointments, work, the grocery store, a family member's house, and much more. In fact, providers say that transportation is one of the biggest barriers for Medicaid and low-income patients. Without this organization, people would miss vital doctor's appointments, needed nutrition, and job opportunities. Community members constantly remind me how meaningful simply listening and providing a 10-minute ride can be. He has consistently made himself available to serve even while doing his classes and having a social life. Lucas has been involved with meal deliveries, community events, and driving for us. He is always sharing how much he enjoys being part of what we do and helping others. Every time he has an opening/availability in his schedule, he is sure to contact us to make us aware of his new availability. Lucas has also been open to helping in the last minute needs as they come in. If he can help fill the gaps he will make himself open to do so. Lucas Wall is the July Volunteer of the Month for Laramie Connections Center.
